The Office of Elder Justice in the Courts (OEJC) offers training virtually for family/lay guardians, Fundamentals of Guardianship – What Family and Non-Professional Guardians Need to Know. The schedule for January through May, 2024 is linked below. The OEJC will continue to notify newly appointed guardians about the training sessions.

The virtual training is presented free of charge by Joan Krechmer (LCSW-G), a professional, nationally certified guardian. A copy of the invitation and schedule are attached. Please note this training is not intended for professional or attorney guardians.

The training is offered as two courses: 1) Guardian of the Estate and 2) Guardian of the Person. A guardian may register for one or both courses. The essential information provided during the training includes: fundamentals of guardianship, ethics and liabilities for guardians, decision-making processes for guardians, best practices for guardians, and resources/tools for guardians. A portion of the training covers annual reporting requirements, and the Guardianship Tracking System.  Although the training is geared towards guardians of persons age 60+, information relevant to adults age 18-59 is also included.
