Following the lead of Gov. Tom Wolf, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered all state-level courts under the Unified Judicial System to recognize Juneteenth as a special holiday.
All courts in the system are ordered closed with the exception of essential functions and proceedings deemed necessary by president judges.
Juneteenth marks the final act of the emancipation of thousands of enslaved people when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, with word of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier.
Though Juneteenth has been celebrated in communities across the country for decades— the word’s origin dates back to 1903 — there is now a movement to make it a federal holiday.
